Good Friday

Community-wide
Worship Night

Friday, April 3rd

Valley View Village

582 FM 1855, Near Marble Falls

What is Valley View — and why are we gathering there?

What started as a God-sized vision is becoming reality because local churches chose to say yes — yes to unity, yes to showing up, yes to building something that will outlast us.

Valley View (insert hyperlink to Valley View Page) will be a place where families find stability, where healing begins, where discipleship grows, and where community feels real and tangible.

We’ll be worshiping on ground that will soon hold stories of restoration. We’ll be standing in a space that exists because the Church chose to move together.

And that’s something worth celebrating.

Welcome + Prayer

Welcome to our Good Friday service. Tonight, the churches of Highland Lakes gather as one to remember, to reflect, and to pray. Follow along here. We are honored to worship alongside you.

1 Corinthians 1:18-2:5

Christ the Wisdom and Power of God

18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written,

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
    and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Proclaiming Christ Crucified

1 And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Prophecies

Psalm 41:1-9

O Lord, Be Gracious to Me

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

41 :1 Blessed is the one who considers the poor!
    In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him;

2 the Lord protects him and keeps him alive;
    he is called blessed in the land;
    you do not give him up to the will of his enemies.

3 The Lord sustains him on his sickbed;
    in his illness you restore him to full health.

4 As for me, I said, “O Lord, be gracious to me;
    heal me, for I have sinned against you!”

5 My enemies say of me in malice,
    “When will he die, and his name perish?”

6 And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words,
    while his heart gathers iniquity;
    when he goes out, he tells it abroad.

7 All who hate me whisper together about me;
    they imagine the worst for me.

8 They say, “A deadly thing is poured out on him;
    he will not rise again from where he lies.”

9 Even my close friend in whom I trusted,
    who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

Zechariah 11:12-13

11:12 Then I said to them, “If it seems good to you, give me my wages; but if not, keep them.” And they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. 13 Then the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord, to the potter.

Fulfillments

John 13:18-30

18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

Matthew 26:14-16

Judas to Betray Jesus

14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin
Lost without hope with no place to begin
Your love Made a way
To let mercy come in
When death was arrested
And my life began

Ash was redeemed only beauty remains
My orphan heart was given a name
My mourning grew quiet
My feet rose to dance
When death was arrested
And my life began

Oh Your grace so free
Washes over me
You have made me new
Now life begins with You
It’s Your endless love
Pouring down on us
You have made us new
Now life begins with You

Released from my chains
I’m a prisoner no more
My shame was a ransom He faithfully bore
He cancelled my debt
And He called me His friend
When death was arrested
And my life began

Oh Your grace so free
Washes over me
You have made me new
Now life begins with You
It’s Your endless love
Pouring down on us
You have made us new
Now life begins with You

Our Savior displayed
On a criminal’s cross
Darkness rejoiced as though
Heaven had lost

But then Jesus arose
With our freedom in hand
That’s when death was arrested
And my life began

Oh Your grace so free
Washes over me
You have made me new
Now life begins with You

It’s Your endless love
Pouring down on us
You have made us new
Now life begins with You

Oh we’re free free, Forever we’re free
Come join the song, Of all the redeemed

Yes we’re free free, Forever amen
When death was arrested
And my life began

Oh we’re free free, Forever we’re free
Come join the song, Of all the redeemed

Yes we’re free free, Forever amen
When death was arrested
And my life began

Oh we’re free free, Forever we’re free
Come join the song, Of all the redeemed

Yes we’re free free, Forever amen
When death was arrested
And my life began

When death was arrested
And my life began

You gave Your life for mine
Nailed to the cross
You crucified
All my sin and shame
It was washed by Your mercy

You are the treasure I find
My reason for living
So let my life
Become an offering
To the One who is worthy

All praise to the Lord most high
All praise to the One
Who saved my life
All praise to Jesus Christ
High King of Heaven
My King forever

You stormed the gates
Of my heart
The veil in between
Was torn apart
Now You hold the keys
To the grave
Cause You bring things to life
You roll stones away

All praise to the Lord most high
All praise to the One
Who saved my life

All praise to Jesus Christ
High King of Heaven
My King forever

I lift my hands up
Lay my whole life down
My whole life down before You
I lift my hands up
Lay my whole life down
My whole life now is for You

All praise to the Lord most high
All praise to the One
Who saved my life
All praise to Jesus Christ
High King of Heaven
My King forever

I lift my hands up
Lay my whole life down
My whole life down before You
I lift my hands up
Lay my whole life down
My whole life now is for You

All praise to the Lord most high
All praise to the One
Who saved my life
All praise to Jesus Christ
High King of Heaven
My King forever

There was a moment
When the lights went out
When death had claimed its victory
The King of love
Had given up His life
The darkest day in history

There on a cross
They made for sinners
For every curse
His blood atoned
One final breath
And it was finished
But not the end
We could have known

For the Earth began to shake
And the veil was torn
What sacrifice was made
As the heavens roared

All hail King Jesus
All hail the Lord
Of Heaven and Earth
All hail King Jesus
All hail the Savior
Of the world

There was a moment
When the sky lit up
A flash of light breaking through
When all was lost
He crossed eternity

The King of life
Was on the move

For in a dark cold tomb
Where our Lord was laid
One miraculous breath
And we’re forever changed

All hail King Jesus
All hail the Lord
Of Heaven and Earth
All hail King Jesus
All hail the Savior
Of the world

Let every knee come bow
Before the King of Kings
Let every tongue
Confess that He is Lord
Lift up your shout
Let us join with all of Heaven

Singing holy
Cry out holy
Singing holy

All hail King Jesus
All hail the Lord
Of Heaven and Earth
All hail King Jesus
All hail the Savior
Of the world

Prophecies

Isaiah 53:1-12

53 : 1 Who has believed what he has heard from us?
    And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

2 For he grew up before him like a young plant,
    and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
    and no beauty that we should desire him.

3 He was despised and rejected by men,
    a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
    he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his wounds we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?

9 And they made his grave with the wicked
    and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
    make many to be accounted righteous,
    and he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Mark 15:1-6, 16-20

15:1 And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” 5 But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

6 Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.

Jesus Is Mocked

15:16 And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

Luke 23:32-34

23:32 Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

And when I think that God
His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die
I scarce can take it in

That on the cross
My burden gladly bearing
He bled and died
Oh to take away my sin

My Savior God to thee
How great thou art

When Christ shall come
With shout of acclamation
And take me home

Psalm 22:12-18

12 Many bulls encompass me;
    strong bulls of Bashan surround me;

13 they open wide their mouths at me,
    like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
    it is melted within my breast;

15 my strength is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For dogs encompass me;
    a company of evildoers encircles me;
they have pierced my hands and feet

17 I can count all my bones—
they stare and gloat over me;

18 they divide my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.

John 19:16-24

16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

“They divided my garments among them,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.”

So the soldiers did these things,

Psalm 22:1-8

Why Have You Forsaken Me?

To the choirmaster: according to The Doe of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

22 : 1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
2 O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.
3 Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises[a] of Israel.
4 In you our fathers trusted;
they trusted, and you delivered them.
5 To you they cried and were rescued;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.
6 But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by mankind and despised by the people.
7 All who see me mock me;
they make mouths at me; they wag their heads;
8 “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him;
let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

Mark 15:25-35

25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”

Him Whom They Have Pierced

10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

The Death of Jesus

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Mark 15:37-41

37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

Many members, but one body.

Tonight, we share in the table of Christ. As the elements are passed to you, please take a moment of personal prayer and partake as you feel led.

Note: The cups flip upside down.

Thank You for Worshiping With Us

Tonight, we remembered the cross as one community. This Sunday, we celebrate the Resurrection in our individual church homes across the Highland Lakes. Whether you have a home church or are looking for a place to celebrate Easter, we invite you to join one of the many local congregations that make up the Ark network.

On Good Friday,
We Gather As One

The cross is where our hope was secured.
Where love looked like something.
Where unity was born.

All Are Welcome!

On Good Friday, we gather to remember the cross.

Not as individual churches.

Not as separate congregations.

But as one body.

Across the Highland Lakes, we are a network of churches committed to Healing Hearts. Uniting Hands. Transforming Communities. And on this sacred night, we unite around the foundation of it all — the sacrifice of Jesus.
